One of the key reconstructions on the railway lines in the country is the project for a modern high speed catenary in the Plovdiv – Svilengrad route.

It will be with entirely new, different from the catenaries used until now, therefore a precise and punctual maintenance and calibration is required, in order to guarantee the fast and reliable train movement. Since this line has not been electrified until now, there are not furnished bases for servicing the contact rail along the Plovdiv – Svilengrad route. One significant elements in this respect, which will guarantee the efficient functioning of the entire catenary, is Krumovo sub region.

Some activities were performed for the period from 2014 till the end of 2015, such as: design and reconstruction of Krumovo sub region and the pipe-duct network in Krumovo town, reconstruction of Krumovo railway crossing, coordination of the design with the relevant authorities, including design and coordination of railway junction with Krumovo railway station, road junction, electric power supply, water supply and sewerage; construction of Krumovo sub region and pipe network in Krumovo railway station in compliance with design, approved by NRIC, rehabilitation of all facilities, affected by the construction, including cables, catenary etc., owned by NRIC; delivery of technological equipment for Krumovo sub region, according to the technical specifications of the design; reconstruction of Krumovo railway crossing, according to the new railway track development; adaptation of the existing railway switches in Krumovo railway station for installation of the new L826H point machines; construction of redundant power supply from catenary for the needs of signaling equipment and telecommunications.

All activities are part of the project of “National Railway Infrastructure Company” (NRIC) for complete reconstruction and electrification of Plovdiv – Svilengrad railway on corridors IV and IX. The project comprises one of the largest and complex railway infrastructure sites, in which numerous leading engineering and construction companies will take part, including Start Engineering JSC, which will execute reconstruction and partial doubling of approximately 150km railway, construction of catenary, traction substation, signaling systems, telecommunications and radio control, as well as facilities that will allow for doubling the entire line in the future.
The repair facility in Krumovo comprises four sub-sites, different kinds of construction and installation works in their nature, namely:

  • Construction of building and furnishing the building with the required facilities and materials;
  • Construction of railroad, installation of two railroad switches for connection with Krumovo railway station and reconstruction of Automatic Crossing Device in Krumovo town;
  • Construction of pipe and duct network for the needs of the signaling equipment and the telecommunications in the railway station area;
  • Delivery and installation of gaskets for the new type of point machines.


Actually, the teams of Start Engineering JSC performed all kinds of construction activities on the design – starting from excavation works to making of reinforced concrete and metal structures, execution of high power and low power building and installation works, W&S, gas, mechanical installation works, including equipment and technical provision, entire adjustment, construction of control systems, grid and electrical systems etc.

Site “Design, construction and commissioning of Krumovo sub region with railway connection with Krumovo railway station and pipe and duct network in the area of Krumovo railway station is achieved by co-financing from a Cohesion fund of the EU, through “Transport” Operational Program 2007 – 2013.
